A nearby community holds a chocolate festival every February and as part of that has a chocolate cake baking contest with professional and amateur divisions. I do not ordinarily bake cakes, but the idea of the contest caught my fancy. I am a little behind in my practice, and the picture above is one of my first attempts. I learned a few things from this attempt to do differently the next time, such as trim the "dome" off the top of the layers so they lie flatter and use more filling between the layers.
This has also been an opportunity to purchase 9 inch cake pans, 6 inch cake pans, an offset spatula, piping bags and tips, parchment rounds to line the pans, cake scrapers, cake carriers, cake plates, and on and on. I had to clear out an entire cabinet to make room for all the supplies.
Wish me luck!
